Taking The Stress Out of Your Vacation
You know how it is you have a great two week vacation planned; you spend weeks planning it and days packing for it. It seems like there is a list of things to do before you can set foot on the plane, from finding someone to house sit and watch your dogs to making sure that you have finished up all your business transactions at work. The list keeps going and by the time you have finished you are exhausted. But wait it doesn’t stop there. Once your vacation starts you realize that the agent that planned your trip meant for you to stay busy seeing everything there is to see.
That’s not really the goal of a vacation as I’m sure you know. A vacation should leave you feeling recharged, refreshed and ready to face the real world again. You shouldn’t come back with anything more than a little jetlag.
About 33% of Americans say that when they come back to work they feel recharged and ready to get back into work. So how do you place yourself in that elite group of happy and productive people?
One of the reasons that some people come back tired is because they took their work with them on vacation. John A. Challenger CEO and founder of global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said “"Employers should insist that little if any work be done by the vacationing employee. Employers may lose the person's output, but they will benefit in the long run from increased productivity, higher morale and a deeper commitment…"
Another reason people come back to tired is because they try to do too many things in two weeks time. They want to see everything there is to see and yet they don’t even get to really enjoy themselves because they are rushing the entire time. Here is a good rule to follow when you make your plans. Don’t try to cram every moment of your time with some place to go. Once you get to where you are going all the lack of sleep from the year is going to catch up with you and you will find that you need a little more sleeping time on some mornings.
Along with trying to do everything people stress over vacation time because they want to make sure they don’t miss their flight, or because they have to wait for their luggage. This one is really simple to take care of and yet maybe the hardest thing for you to do. When you find yourself in a rush, take a moment to relax and breath. Last I checked tapping your foot impatiently didn’t speed time up.
Some people are really bad for taking all of their problems on vacation with them. Family matters and relationships at work are all they talk about. Vacation means more than just physically relocating yourself; it more importantly means relocating your mind to other moods and thoughts. Now it’s true, you may need to talk some problems out but don’t let it take up all your vacation time.
The most important thing to remember is to enjoy yourself.
